General Nursing and Midwifery

SCHOOL OF NURSING

 

The School of Nursing of the MOSC Medical College Hospital (known as M M M Hospital at that time) started on 22nd January 1973 with 20 students intake.  Ms. C.T. Saramma was the first principal.  There were only 2 tutors and 2 staff. The School started functioning in the hospital building and all the students were day scholars.  Hostel for the students was started in December 1975 in a rented building.  The School was recognized by the Indian Nursing Council & Kerala Nurses' & Midwives' Council.  A separate building was constructed for the School and hostel with the aid of EZE, West Germany under the leadership of the Most Rev. Dr. Philippose Mar Theophilos Metropolitan.  The new building started functioning in 1984. 

 

The intake of students were increased to 30 in 1976. 

 

The duration of the course was 3  ½ years.  Eligibility for admission was S.S.L.C pass with 50 % marks.  In 1981 the minimum qualification requirement for admission was changed to pre - degree.   

 

In 1987 the duration of the course was changed to 3 years.  In 1988 pre-degree with Science subject was made compulsory and the intake was increased to 40 in 1994 and in 1996 was increased to 50. 

 

In 2005, new syllabus of 3  ½ years programme was introduced by INC.  Then in 2005 October onwards the intake of students had changed to October instead of January by Kerala Nurses' & Midwives' Council.  The new syllabus is very advanced with research, administration, Community Health Nursing Theory & Practical in each year.

P T A  MEETING

 

P T A meetings are conducted 3 times in an year and progress reports are given in these meetings.  Parents are given a chance for suggestions and criticisms for the betterment of students

 

 

 

SPIRITUAL NEEDS

 

Students should attend chapel service, morning & evening every day.  Bible classes are taken by hospital chaplain once a week.  After the selection of the students, they are sent to Sasthamkotta - Bible College for 1 month course as preparation to nursing and as a carrier guidance course.  When the students come back parents are called in for  ½ a day counseling class.  The students take active role in all the spiritual activities of the hospital. 

 

STUDENT WELFARE PROGRAMMES

 

1. Teacher - Guardian groups

 

Students are devided into groups and a teacher is in charge of each group.  They meet once a month, have a get together and go for outings occasionally so that the students get a chance to ventilate their minds.

 

II. Educational Tours

 

Educational tours are arranged from time to time to different places.

 

III. Student Nurses Association

 

All students are members of SNA.  They participate in unit, zonal, state and National level competitions and have won prizes.

Students are posted in all departments of hospital and in Urban and rural community health as per Indian Nursing Council norms.

 

 

EXAMINATIONS

 

The students have to appear for examinations conducted by Council for 3 years, and School exams for the internship period.

 

 

 

 

FEE STRUCTURE

 

The total expenditure for the whole 3  ½ years is approximately 1 lakh which includes tution & accommodation.  The fees may be revised by the management from time to time.

 

LIBRARY

 

The School, has its own library with 1500 books and various, periodicals
