Department of Neurosciences started functioning as the first super speciality department of this hospital on 16-5-1983. Many have contributed to the growth in size and reputation of this department. However the success in clinical and surgical services and the residency training programme must be credited to one remarkable individual - Sojan Ipe. Now the department has the ability to tackle all types of brain tumours, cerebrovascular diseases, including aneurisms and AVMs and a wide range of spinal pathologies extending from craniovertibral junction to lumbosacral region. They have an enviable set up for the management of brain and spinal cord injuries with multiparameter monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps and to top it all a team of dedicated health care professionals. The operation theatre is provided with microinstruments, drill system and an imported operating microscope. They are the first to possess a CT scan in the state, first to do spinal stereotactic procedures in the country and the first to do endoscopy assisted spinal surgery in the state. Their areas of special interest include epilepsy, cerebrovascular accidents, brain and spine injuries, headache, back and neck pain, movement disorders, brain and spinal tumours and skull base surgeries.
