Apart from lectures in systemic physiology, the department organises seminars and symposia for students.
-
Practical classes are intended to give students adequate hands on exposure to routine haernatological studies and to develop clinical examination skills. In addition they are introduced to electrophysiological techniques like ECG and its interpretation.
-
The department is well equipped to conduct various amphibian and mammalian experiments for undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and also for research purposes.
Research activities
Envenomation due to snakebite is a major health hazard to the population served by the MOSC Medical College. In most of these cases the species of the snake that has bitten the victim is not known. Polyvalent antiserum raised against a mixture of venoms from major Indian snakes is currently used for treatment. The large volume of polyvalent antiserum that is required for the treatment and the slow recovery and complications like severe allergic reactions are of serious concern. Identification of the species of the snake inflicting the bite is, the primary requisite in the use of species-specific antivenom. Steps are being initiated in collaboration with the departments of Medicine, Microbiology and Pharmacology to develop an immunodiagnostic test kit to identify the species of snakes responsible for envenomation. | |
