Ophthalmology Department:

The Ophthalmology Department starts functioning in 1972 and Joined hands with CBM Germany in 1974.We have 2 fully equipped operation theatres with 3 tables where all ophthalmic micro-surgeries can be performed. We have a Humphrey Automated Field. Analyser, which is an essential tool in the early diagnosis of glaucoma. We acquired the Phaco-Emulsifier using which structureless cataract surgery can be performed. The Department has the Zeiss Fundus Camera and Green laser for the treatment of Diabetic retinopathy and other retinal diseases. Thus we are able to provide state of the art treatment of cataract, glaucoma and retinal diseases.

The Community Eye Care Project started on 01.04.1995, to serve the community by providing preventive, curative and rehabilitative services to the blind people in 24 Grama Panchayaths around Kolenchery. The target population is 4.5 lakhs and the trained health workers directly screened a population of 4.08 lakhs and performed more than 9000 cataract surgeries during the last 11 years. Under the Rehabilitation Programme 28 disabled persons from the project area were rehabilitated by giving aid to start self employment programme.

COURSES: Besides M.B.B.S. Course

DOT: Diploma Course in Ophthalmic Technology, recognized by CMAI. Every year 10 students are trained. Separate hostel facilities are provided for boys & Girls.

DNB: Planning to start DNB in Ophthalmology from next academic year.

Rehabilitation Centre for The Blind And Orthopaedically Handicapped Women
(Production cum training Centre)

 

Rehabilitation Centre for [lie Blind was started under the Ophthalmology Department in 1974 with the assistance of Christoffel Blinden Mission Germany. Since 1995, the Centre admits Orthopaedically Handicapped women also.

Objectives

  • To provide vocational training to the Blind and Orthopaedically Handicapped Women.
  • To provide Community Based Rehabilitation Services to the disabled persons.
  • To give counselling and placement services to the disabled persons.

Vocations Available For Training Now

  • Photo and certificate lamination, DTP training Book binding, Offset Printing & Printing related works.
  • Two public telephone booths run by 2 blind women are functioning successfully in our hospital, under the
    supervision of the centre.

  • The printing press started during 2001, is successfully running. All kinds of printing works are done here.
  • The aim of the project is to train the inmates in offset printing and binding works.
  • Besides the routine functioning of the centre the inmates participates in various social, cultural and sports activities organized for the disabled by the Government and the NGO's.
