Starting as a speciality Unit (Unit 3) of Orthopaedics in August 2006, the above was converted into a  totally new independent speciality department two years later to give more focus & thrust to specialised  management of Joint problems.   As Sports injuries are mainly Joint injuries, this is naturally an important sub-specialty handled by our department. Recently, we have also invested heavily in aquiring state-of-the-art  equipment for advanced Arthroscopic surgeries of shoulder, knee, elbow, ankle, wrist etc from Germany & USA to offer high quality treatment keeping abreast of all the latest developments in the field but at a fraction of the cost of similar treatments offered at private hospitals with comparable facilities.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES:-

1.       December 2007      : 'All Kerala' UNI-CONDYLAR (half-knee) REPLACEMENT

                                           conference.

             Inauguration & Live surgical demonstration with Cadaveric workshop for  practicing     orthopaedic   surgeons - for the first time in Kerala - by Dr. David Griffiths, Director of   Locomotor Division at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, UK who had trained Dr Biju Jacob Abraham. 

 2.      17^th January, 2009 : INTERACTIVE open-house session with operated patients.

              A unique programme where public directly interacted with patients who underwent   TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENT SURGERIES & 'KEY-HOLE' JOINT surgeries in this   institution. It was held to commemorate one year of establishment of regular JOINT    REPLACEMENT & ARTHROSCOPIC services in this institution.

 3.      25, 26 October, 2009 : Inaugration of ADVANCED SHOULDER services.

              Inaugurated by Dr I.P.S Oberoi - former secretary of Indian Arthroscopy Society. Several Arthroscopic surgeries of shoulder, ankle, Knee etc were done at concessional    rate for financially - challenged patients.

              For achieving the above, in the last three years there has been a radical revamping  of our Operating theatre set-up and Sterilisation protocols including setting up of   a state-of- the-art Central Sterile Supply Division. All these made it possible to  build up the above Department from scratch to what it is today. As  facilities   continue to improve and required new equipments & infrastructure get added, we  hope to expand further to achieve our dream of making this into a  renowned 'centre of repute' for management of all types of JOINT   injuries & diseases including Sports Injuries.
