Anaesthesiology

History

The Department of Anaesthesiology started functioning in 1970 with 4 operation rooms. Now our theatre complex includes 10 modern, fully equipped, centrally air-conditioned theatres in which the following surgical specialities are carried out regularly- Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery, Urology, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Cancer Surgery, Dental & Facio-Maxillary Surgery, Orthopaedics, General & Thoracic Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Otorhino-laryngology & Opthamology.

Services Rendered:-

Our services are available round the clock

perioperative patient care   :Anaesthetic management, postoperative recovery room care & ICU management comes in the armentarium of anaesthesiologists. We have at our disposal ,various modern anaesthetic & monitoring equipments ,with real time and trend facilities ,which aid us in managing various patients ,one day old baby to the elderly and debilitated. Postoperative analgesia through continuous epidural technique is provided regularly following major surgeries.

Trauma resuscitation   Anaesthesiologists play  an active role in the resuscitation and intensive care of trauma victims including respiratory care & pain management.

Resuscitation &Care   of other  critically ill patients in various ICU units & wards -Respiratory support ,central venous cannulation, invasive monitoring techniques.

Epidural Labour analgesia    Facilities for painless labour and delivery are available 24 hours a day. This is one of the first centeres in Kerala to start this service.

Pain& Palliative Care division   To add life into the days of cancer  & other chronically ill patients, providing physical ,psychological ,social & spiritual support .Pain management is achieved through drugs and other techniques like nerve blocks. Oral Morphine ,the key drug for cancer pain management is available through our department. There are facilities for home care whenever needed .Our motto is "To improve the quality of Life" .

Peripheral Services   Anaesthesia facilities are provided for Psychiatry patients undergoing modified electro convulsive therapy, for Gastroenterology patients undergoing procedures like ERCP, for ESWL in urology patients and for special radiological tests like CAT scan & MRI involving children.

Academic Programmes

  • Training of undergraduate (MBBS) Students
  • The department has been recognized for training medical graduates for the DNB Examination since the year 2000
  • First institution in India to start the two year diploma course in Anaesthesia Technology affiliated to CMAI
  • Training junior doctors and interns in trauma & Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Regular academic sessions like CME programmes ,journal clubs & case discussions
